Position Purpose:
Responsible for providing radiation physics services for the department of radiation oncology; supervising and directing the physics staff (including the dosimetrists and mold room tech); managing the clinical quality control and related operations activities of the physics division; working with the radiation safety offices as to the Radiation Therapy related exposure; and planning and conducting in service education and training programs for staff and students, when appropriate. Ensures accuracy of all radiation measurements in all Radiation Oncology programs provided by or affiliated with Saint Alphonsus through periodic checks and records maintenance. Participates in ongoing meetings and chart reviews (e.g., chart rounds) for department procedural accuracy. Oversees brachytherapy procedures, safety, accuracy, and record maintenance. Assures accurate commissioning of radiation equipment and calibration. Contributes to administrative functions such as NRC documentation, Radiation Safety Committee, and department policies & procedures review.

Job Description Details:

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Master's degree in a related field required. PhD preferred. Must be certified as a Medical Physicist (MP) by The American Board of Radiology (ABR) or by The American Board for Medical Physics (ABMP). 3 to 5 years of clinical experience as Medical Radiation Physicist in a cancer treatment setting required. Ability to calibrate linear accelerators and radiation sources, including HDR equipment, clinical dosimetry of external beams and implant sources, patient set-up and computer treatment planning as well as utilize calculators, measuring tools (calipers, beam alignment, and dosimetry equipment, etc.), linear accelerators, and simulators required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Meets Health System's Guiding Behaviors and Caring Standards including interpersonal communication and professional conduct expectations. Supervises and directs the physics staff (including physicists, dosimetrists, and service engineer) to provide quality patient care and safety in the most cost efficient manner. Directs and supervises quality assurance program for the department as mandated by regulatory agencies, including the Joint Commission on Accreditation for Healthcare Organizations (TJC), Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), and Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Supervises and participates in selection, acceptance testing and commissioning of all new radiation therapy equipment. Participates in teaching other health professionals, performs in services for staff and assists the radiation oncologists with research protocols. Maintains professional development and continuing education standards. Attends work on schedule. Assures compliance with manufacturer's operating specifications. Revenue management: ensures the accuracy of documenting services and supplies provided to the patients. May serve as the Radiation Safety Officer for SARMC - Chief physicist only. Assures accuracy of all radiation treatments. Provides support to dosimetrists when needed.
