Job Description


The Production Planner will support TSI’s in-house machine shop's weekly production plan to make specialized parts for our measurement equipment.  The Production Plannerwill review lead times and manufacturing capacity, to create and release production plans, analyze customer order information and communicate order and delivery information to project managers, customer service and management. The Production Planner will procure materials and equipment to achieve internal customer service expectations and support production plans. Obtains materials, equipment or supplies at lowest cost consistent with required quality, quantity and availability.  Actively researches and develops new sources of supply and/or recommends possible substitute materials.   As a core member of the manufacturing value streams, the Production Planner will be required to understand the material flow of the products they are scheduling as well as the dynamics of the bill of material structures.


  1. Prepare master schedules and production plans based on the input from sales and marketing forecasts. 
  2. Review and becomes familiar with engineering drawings, specifications, Bill of Materials (BOM), and other technical documents for assigned work centers.
  3. Release individual production jobs based on the master schedule, capacity constraints and available materials. 
  4. Understand all material replenishment methodologies, plan and change the materials to utilize the most effective and efficient method. (i.e. issue to backflush, pegged demand v.s. reorder point, Kanban and point of use inventory).
  5. Allocation of time and relative importance of activities between production planning & scheduling (70%) and purchasing of raw materials (30%). 
  6. Release production jobs based on the master schedule, capacity constraints and available materials. 
  7. Work with TSI operations staff and suppliers to resolve material shortages, backlogs, and other potential schedule interruptions.
  8. Maintain accurate inventory levels to meet stated department goals and corporate objectives.
  9. Evaluate, recommend, and support changes in methods and procedures.
  10. Participate in cross-functional continuous process improvement teams as assigned.
  11. Effectively manages expenditures to reduce the total cost of ownership of material acquisitions.
  12. Determine lead times and maintain SAP Material Master data integrity for inventory planning and purchasing.
  13. Manage purchasing and inventory planning of assigned commodities.
  14. Works effectively in all inventory, planning and purchasing screens in SAP.
  15. Negotiate contracts with suppliers.
  16. Peform other task and special projects as assigned. 



  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Supply Chain Management, Economics or similar is required.
  • CPIM, ISM or other APICS Certification is desired.

Work Experience

  • Minimum of five years of experience in the Supply Chain Management.
  • Minimum of one year of Tier I ERP software experience (SAP, Oracle or JD Edwards).
