Job Description

Basic Function

The primary responsibility of a faculty member at Northern Virginia Community College is to provide quality instruction for the students.The major emphasis is on excellent teaching by working with students in classrooms, laboratories, individual conferences, and related activities. Faculty help students develop their interests and abilities to their fullest capacity to become better workers and better citizens. The incumbent will also assume Program Director duties and directly supervise and schedule adjunct faculty for teaching positions. The Program Director is responsible for the day to day management of the program as well as monitoring for updates and maintaining accreditation for the program. NOVA faculty may be assigned to any campus based upon enrollment and staffing needs.This recruitment is being filled, contingent upon availability of funds

Duties and Responsibilities

The faculty position in Dental Assisting is responsible for teaching various courses in the discipline. Faculty members also serve as faculty advisors, serve on division/campus/college committees, schedule faculty meetings, and participate in curriculum development and assessment. This appointment has a normal teaching load of 15 credits per semester. The Program Director is responsible for maintaining program standards and accreditation. Duties also include scheduling, monitoring, and evaluating of adjunct faculty, accepting and reviewing potential students, and curriculum management for the program.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree with a current Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) certificate as recognized by successfully passing the Dental Assisting National Board Exam (DANB). Three years (full-time) or more clinical or teaching experience as a certified dental assistant. Current CPR certification from the American Red Cross. HEP-B vaccination or documented immunity. Current PPD testing. Knowledge of CODA Standards, and extensive experience regarding the accreditation process and the writing of a self-study report as outlined by CODA. The successful candidate must be willing to teach a combination of day, evening, weekend, and online classes with the ability to be flexible to work at any of the College’s locations. Successful completion and passing of a criminal background check is required.

Preferred Qualifications

Dentist/or RDH with current CDA preferred. Three years teaching experience in Dental Assisting in a college or university setting. Experience in four-handed dentistry and clinical experience in a dental office. Practice management knowledge and skills in dental office technology. Understanding of instructional technology and learning management systems like CANVAS. Experience and knowledge of maintaining program standards and program accreditation. Experience with and preparation for teaching culturally, linguistically, socio-economically, and academically diverse college-level students.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The ability to effectively teach Dental Assisting didactic and laboratory sessions. Ability to use technology to enhance classroom instruction. Ability to use online resources and familiarity with learning management systems. Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and oral/written communication skills. The ability to schedule and monitor students for their clinical rotations. Experience in four-handed dentistry and general knowledge of essential functions performed in the dental office. Skilled in maintaining program and student records for accreditation. Working knowledge of the accreditation process as outlined by CODA, maintenance of accreditation records and submission of required accreditation reports.
