Eckerd Connects Project Bridge
Make a difference as an Eckerd Connects Project Bridge GED Instructor.

Eckerd Connects' Project Bridge provides transitional services to boys and girls ages 11-21 reintegrating back to their home communities from residential commitment programs. Through an innovative partnership with the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ), Project Bridge works to increase post-placement stability of youth through transition coordination from residential placement.

Our at-risk youth need an instructor who believes and cares about them and their success. If you are a person who’s interested in this population, you get to be part of making a difference. It’s a big day for both the student and the instructor when a student passes a GED test. Project Bridge GED Instructors work students to create personalized learning plans to strengthen academic skills. Whether to help a student earn a GED certificate or strengthen a youth’s academic skills for work, Project Bridge GED instructors help at-risk youth pave a pathway to stability and success.

Position Concept
The GED Instructor position provides program specific instruction to participants with a primary emphasis on excellence in classroom teaching. Staff is expected to demonstrate and maintain competence in each of the areas outlined below.

Essential Functions   

  • The GED Instructor will create an effective and student-centered classroom environment that adheres to the prescribed curricula, assessment guidelines, and standards conducive to the learning experience including supervision of students, and to the development of students’ skill levels to assist them with achieving their education and life goals through Eckerd methodologies.  
  • This position will present curricula to students in a professional manner in the classroom and via online instruction. He/she will provide online and class-based students an organized instructional program (instructional/lesson plans); and developed individualized learning plans from assessment reports to ensure students meet their education goals.  
  • The incumbent will provide life skills (Career Pathways curricula) instruction to all students at least twice a month during each student’s tenure in the program.  
  • She/he will utilize effective classroom management skills; assist, advise, and counsel a diverse student population with regards to program policies and standards while demonstrating sensitivity to student needs and circumstances.  
  • He/she conducts orientation sessions and provide students with the necessary program information i.e. enrollment packets, curriculum information, etc.; and administer tests (GED Practice Tests and curricula-based tests) in compliance with standard-based practices and integrity.  
  • The GED Instructor completes, protects, and maintains thorough, accurate student files/records including standardized tests, class assignments, tests, monthly reports, personal data, and other program related information as required; conduct case management sessions and maintains case notes as required by the funding source.  
  • The incumbent will coordinate with Eckerd Transition Coordinators to participate in Individual Service Plan (ISP) conference calls that include youth and other Project Bridge partners to discuss the Eckerd GED program and answer questions from youth transitioning to the program.  
  • This position will coordinate with Project Bridge Partners staff (HBI and Eckerd Workforce) regarding instructional schedules for youth participating in vocational and career training and Eckerd GED program.  
  • She/he will manage the GED program site, in coordination with Education Coordinator and Executive Director, by overseeing the day-to-day operations, program equipment, materials, and classroom structure and activities to ensure students have a safe, clean, and effective learning environment.  
  • The GED Instructor will prepare and submit the required reports to the Education Coordinator by their deadlines.  
  • The incumbent will participate in Instructional Team Conference Calls for program updates, instructional strategies, and administrative changes and updates.  
  • This position may be required to travel to satellite/community-based learning sites as needed to provide instruction for youth unable to participate in class-based instruction. She/he may also be required provide transportation of youth, as needed, and will comply with Eckerd’s Fleet Safety Program.   

Other Duties Include, But Not Limited To   

  • Report any acts, incidents or conditions that reflect the possibility of inappropriate youth-to-youth or staff-to-youth relationships.  
  • Report any use of physical force and all unusual incidents per Eckerd policy and state guidelines.  
  • Participate in training and development activities as required.  
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.   

Position Specifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree in education or a Bachelor's degree in a related field. At least one year of work experience in coaching, training, or teaching small/large group instruction is preferred. Classroom teaching experience educating at-risk youth population a plus. Experience teaching GED test prep skills also preferred. Teaching Certificate preferred, but not required.
Experience: At least one year of successful teaching, coaching, or training experience preferred. One-year experience supervising or leading other teachers also a plus.
Skills: Supervisory, analytical, excellent verbal and written communication, self-motivation, collaborative, resourceful, flexible, creative, objective, interpersonal skills initiative, problem solving, decision making, organization, planning and critical judgment skills. Basic skills instruction, development and use of learning and media centers required. Ability to learn and utilize various instructional technology software programs and equipment required. Experiential and special education, and supervisory knowledge a plus.
Physical Demands: Requires extended periods of walking/sitting/standing; Depending on the assigned program/facility, position may also occasionally expose incumbent to working outdoors for extended periods of time, and exposure to the elements; Incumbent may occasionally lift/move up to 25 pounds. Must be free of communicable diseases as defined by state and to the extent that knowledge is attainable under the law.
Other: Must interface effectively at all organization levels, commitment to professional standards and personal development; must meet state criminal background check requirements.
Travel: Must be able to meet requirements for Eckerd’s Auto Insurance and be able to drive for business purposes. Must have appropriate and valid state driver’s license.
